Navigating Mid-Life Transition and Work-Life Balance
Introduction. This case study explores the journey of a female engineer in the Department of National Defence who faced a mid-life crisis. As a manager, mother, and professional, she struggled with balancing her work and family responsibilities, experiencing self-judgment and guilt about taking time for herself. Through transpersonal coaching, she sought to improve her work-life balance, alleviate self-imposed pressures, and connect with a deeper sense of purpose.
Client Profile. The client, a female engineer in her 40s, managed a team within the Department of National Defence. She was also a mother of two young children. The client wanted to create a healthier work-life balance, reduce feelings of guilt about personal and family time, and address the physical and emotional toll that work and family stress had on her well-being.
Initial Situation. At the beginning of coaching, the client expressed that she was in the midst of a mid-life crisis, feeling a strong sense of dissatisfaction and frustration. She was highly critical of herself for not achieving certain career milestones and felt conflicted about taking time for self-care. This led to mounting stress, affecting both her physical health and emotional well-being.
Coaching Objectives. We contracted for 6 sessions. The main objectives of the coaching engagement were to:
- Help the client redefine her concept of success and connect with her true purpose.
- Support her in building emotional resilience to handle work and family pressures more effectively.
- Assist her in exploring possibilities for a work-life balance that would allow for self-care without guilt.
- Facilitate a transition to a career role that aligned with her well-being and provided more flexibility.
Coaching Methodology and Tools. To support the client’s goals, I employed a combination of transpersonal coaching techniques and tools:
- Deep Self-Exploration: Through transpersonal coaching, we engaged in deep self-exploration, helping her examine her values, priorities, and beliefs about success.
- Meditation for Inner Awareness: Guided meditation exercises allowed her to connect with her inner states, fostering greater awareness and reducing the influence of self-judgmental thoughts.
- Creative Visualization and Storytelling: Visualization and storytelling exercises helped the client imagine a life that aligned with her true desires, allowing her to reconnect with her aspirations beyond her roles as a mother and manager.
- Drama Triangle: Using the Drama Triangle model, we examined the different roles she assumed (e.g., “Rescuer,” “Victim”) in her personal and professional life, helping her recognize patterns that were not serving her well.
- Emotional Resilience Building: By addressing self-judgment and perfectionism, we focused on building her emotional resilience to better handle work and family stress.
Processes and Interventions. Several key processes and interventions supported the client’s progress throughout the coaching sessions:
- Meditation for Inner Awareness and Self-Compassion: Through regular meditation exercises, the client learned to tune into her feelings without judgment, fostering self-compassion and awareness. This practice allowed her to recognize her needs without feeling guilt or pressure to be “perfect.”
- Creative Visualization and Storytelling for Future Self: By using storytelling, the client envisioned a future self who had embraced balance, purpose, and self-care. This visualization helped her identify new career and lifestyle possibilities and gave her a sense of hope and direction.
- Drama Triangle for Role Awareness: By exploring the Drama Triangle, we identified patterns in how she related to others. She recognized that she often took on the “Rescuer” role at work and home, leading to burnout. Understanding these roles helped her break free from these patterns and adopt healthier relational dynamics.
- Redefining Success and Connecting with Purpose: Together, we explored the meaning of success in her life and encouraged her to consider a “higher purpose” that aligned with her values and aspirations, rather than societal or career-driven expectations. This process allowed her to reframe her career and life goals in a way that resonated with her authentic self.
Outcomes and Achievements. The coaching engagement led to several positive outcomes for the client:
- New Career Direction: She decided to transition from her managerial role to a specialized support role within her department, which offered more autonomy and less stress. This new role aligned better with her desire for flexibility and freedom of action, supporting a healthier work-life balance.
- Reduced Self-Judgment and Guilt: Through self-exploration and meditation, she learned to let go of self-imposed judgments, giving herself permission to prioritize self-care and family time without guilt.
- Enhanced Emotional Resilience: By recognizing and addressing her inner critic and perfectionist tendencies, she built greater emotional resilience, helping her manage stress more effectively.
- Clarity of Purpose and Redefined Success: The client redefined her idea of success, shifting her focus from external achievements to internal fulfillment. She gained clarity on her purpose, aligning her career with her values and the type of life she wanted to lead.
Conclusion and Lessons Learned. This case study demonstrates how transpersonal coaching can empower clients to explore questions of identity and purpose, redefine success, and create a work-life balance that supports well-being. The client’s journey highlights the importance of tools like meditation, storytelling, and the Drama Triangle in fostering self-awareness and emotional resilience. By aligning her career with her true self, she was able to transition to a role that fulfilled her need for flexibility, connection with family, and personal growth.
